The Biden administration has decided to help farmers in the Western United States by paying them to save water. This decision comes as the region faces one of the worst droughts in history. On Thursday, the Department of Agriculture announced that it will invest up to $400 million to encourage farmers in 11 states to reduce their water usage while still growing their crops.
According to the Department of Agriculture, this initiative is expected to save around 50,000 acre-feet of water, which is equivalent to about 16 billion gallons. This move aims to address the ongoing water crisis that many farmers in the West are facing.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack expressed concern about the challenges that agricultural producers are experiencing due to the prolonged drought. He emphasized the importance of supporting farmers while also promoting water conservation.
“Agricultural producers are the backbone of rural communities across the West, and many of them are struggling under prolonged drought conditions,” Vilsack stated. He further added, “We want to scale up the tools available to keep farmers farming while also voluntarily conserving water and expanding markets for water-saving commodities.” This initiative is designed not only to assist farmers in maintaining their operations but also to encourage them to adopt water-saving technologies and practices.
Under this program, the Department of Agriculture will provide up to $15 million to 18 selected water districts. These districts will then work directly with farmers to create agreements that support the implementation of water-saving technologies and the cultivation of water-efficient crops.
The water districts chosen for this initiative are located in various states, including Idaho, Utah, Oregon, California, Washington, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Montana, Colorado, and Nevada. These areas have been particularly hard hit by water shortages, which are linked to both the ongoing drought and the overuse of water from the Colorado River. Additionally, the situation has been worsened by the production of water-heavy crops such as alfalfa and the impacts of climate change.
By investing in this program, the Biden administration hopes to make a positive difference in the lives of farmers and the communities they support. The goal is to find a balance between agricultural needs and water conservation, ensuring that farmers can continue to produce food while also being responsible stewards of the environment.
