Former President Trump made a heartfelt call to the family of James Copenhaver, who was critically injured during a rally in Butler last Saturday. Copenhaver, 74, from Moon Township, was not available for the call as he was asleep, but Trump promised to call back at a later time to speak directly with him. Joseph Feldman, the family spokesperson and attorney, shared that Trump’s humility and pleasant demeanor deeply touched the family during the call.
“They were shocked by just how humble he was,” Feldman said. The Copenhaver family found the former president to be “very pleasant” and “respectful” over the phone.
Copenhaver’s condition was upgraded from critical to serious on Wednesday, and he has been communicative over the last couple of days while continuing his recovery in the hospital. In a statement to Fox News, Copenhaver expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, who was killed in the shooting and offered thoughts and prayers for the recovery of David Dutch and President Trump.
“I am thankful for all of my amazing caregivers who have done a wonderful job saving my life and helping me on my road to recovery,” Copenhaver said. “Recovery will be slow but steady. I hope to get back onto my Harley Davidson someday and go for a ride with my best friend Randy, who attended the rally with me that day and was the first person to care for me after being shot.”
The Copenhaver family also expressed their gratitude to the first responders, medics, and hospital staff who provided initial and ongoing care. They extended their thoughts and prayers to the other victims and their families, as well as to President Trump, wishing everyone a safe and speedy recovery.
Pennsylvania State Police identified the other wounded victim as 57-year-old David Dutch of New Kensington, Pennsylvania. Dutch, who sustained two gunshot wounds at the rally, is in stable condition. His friends shared that he remains in stable condition and is recovering.
The victim who tragically lost his life in the shooting was identified as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter from Buffalo Township. Comperatore was killed while protecting his wife and daughters from the gunfire. Memorial services for Comperatore began on Thursday.
“Corey Comperatore was our beloved father and husband and a friend to so many throughout the Butler region,” his family said in a statement. “He was a local leader and veteran, a former fire chief, and a committed Christian who found peace and joy through our church.
Our family is finding comfort and peace through the heartfelt messages of encouragement from people around the world, the support of our church and community, and most of all, the strength of God. We thank the countless people who have prayed for us throughout the past week. We deeply appreciate your kindness.
