Idaho Democratic Party Chair Sees Rising Interest in Harris-Walz Ticket

Even in the deep-red state of Idaho, Democrats are feeling a surge of excitement about Vice President Kamala Harris and her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Rep. Lauren Necochea, who chairs the Idaho Democratic Party and serves as the assistant minority leader in the Idaho House of Representatives, expressed her thoughts on this growing enthusiasm during an interview.

Necochea shared that she has sensed a lot of interest in Gov. Walz. She believes he is an excellent choice as a running mate, bringing a wealth of experience that appeals to voters feeling disillusioned by divisive politics.

“He has deep experience in public service, from his time as a command sergeant major in the Army National Guard to teaching high school and coaching football. He also served six terms in Congress before becoming governor of Minnesota,” Necochea said. She emphasized that voters are responding to Walz’s authenticity, which resonates with people from both sides of the political spectrum.

As one of Idaho’s delegates to the upcoming Democratic National Convention, which begins on August 19 in Chicago, Necochea is looking forward to the event. On that day, attempts to reach Idaho Republican Party Chairwoman Dorothy Moon for her perspective were unsuccessful.

Recently, former President Donald Trump announced U.S. Senator J.D. Vance from Ohio as his running mate. Vance, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who holds a law degree from Yale and is the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adds another layer of competition to the race.

Necochea noted that momentum for the Harris-Walz ticket has been building since President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he would not seek re-election. This paved the way for Harris to become the nominee. She highlighted concerns in Idaho and nationwide regarding abortion rights and access to women’s healthcare, stating that Harris represents a strong contrast to Trump and Vance.

Reflecting on the current political climate, Necochea mentioned that the excitement surrounding the Harris-Walz ticket reminds her of the energy leading up to the 2008 election when Barack Obama was elected. “We’re facing a similar historic moment now, on the brink of electing the first female president,” she said. The national enthusiasm is evident, as seen in Vice President Harris’s record-breaking fundraising efforts in recent weeks.

Necochea’s observations align with those of Boise State University political scientist Jaclyn Kettler, who noted a significant increase in interest and enthusiasm for the upcoming presidential election, particularly among Democrats. “It is amazing how much has changed in the last few weeks,” Kettler remarked in a phone interview. While many polls still suggest Trump holds a lead, especially in critical swing states, the renewed energy among Democrats represents a major shift.

Kettler pointed out that although Idaho is likely to vote for Trump, some Democrats were concerned about down-ballot races. When Biden was running for re-election, there were worries that some Democrats might not turn out to vote or attract swing voters who could make a difference in Congress or local elections. In Idaho, particularly in places like Ada County, higher voter turnout is essential for making local and legislative races competitive.

Regarding the significance of the vice presidential candidate, Kettler noted that opinions among political scientists vary. “Research shows mixed results on how much impact a vice presidential nominee has on winning additional states that a presidential candidate might not win alone,” she explained. However, she added that the selection of a running mate remains an important decision.

As the presidential race heats up, the enthusiasm surrounding the Harris-Walz ticket could play a significant role in energizing voters, especially in states like Idaho, where Democrats are often outnumbered. The contrast between the two parties and their candidates could drive more people to the polls, making the upcoming election crucial for both sides.
