Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that SpaceX and X will relocate their headquarters from California to Texas. This decision comes in response to a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits California school districts from informing parents about changes in their child’s gender identity.
In a statement posted on X, Musk expressed his firm stance: “This is the final straw. Because of this law and others like it that undermine families and businesses, SpaceX will relocate its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.” He further announced that X’s headquarters would also move from San Francisco to Austin.
This is the final straw.
Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. https://t.co/cpWUDgBWFe

Musk had previously warned about such legislation, stating that it would prompt families and businesses to leave California to safeguard their interests. The move follows a trend set in 2021 when Tesla, under Musk’s leadership, shifted its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin.

The decision is also rooted in personal experience. In 2022, People magazine reported that Musk’s 18-year-old daughter legally changed her name and gender. Reflecting on this, Musk commented in October 2022 to the Financial Times, “Can’t win them all,” while maintaining good relationships with his other children. Requests for additional comments from SpaceX regarding the move went unanswered at the time of reporting.
