An iconic building in Idaho Falls, once home to a popular bar and live concert venue, has been revitalized by local entrepreneurs Ritchie Alan and JD Henderson. AJ’s Place, located at 1560 Lindsay Boulevard, opened its doors in April, marking a return to the venue’s roots as a vibrant hub for entertainment and community gatherings.
The building, formerly known for housing the Skyway Bar during the 1960s and more recently Mac ‘n Kelly’s Pub & Grill until 2022, transformed Alan and Henderson’s ownership. With a fresh coat of paint, a revamped stage equipped with a modern sound system, and an inviting bar area, AJ’s Place now embodies the essence of an old-fashioned nightclub with contemporary amenities.
“We’ve focused on creating a versatile venue that can accommodate a variety of performances,” Alan explained in an interview with EastIdahoNews.com. “From live music and burlesque shows to open mic nights and comedy acts, we want AJ’s Place to be a place where people can come together and enjoy a wide range of entertainment.”
The venue has quickly gained popularity, hosting packed houses every weekend since its opening. Alan and Henderson have also invested in a state-of-the-art $12,000 sound system to enhance the experience for live performers. Additionally, they offer a private waiting room with stage access, ensuring comfort and convenience for artists between sets.
Complementing the entertainment offerings, AJ’s Place features a menu inspired by Alan’s culinary background and childhood memories. “We take pride in serving quality comfort food like greasy cheeseburgers with real bacon and homemade sauces,” Alan remarked. The restaurant aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere where patrons can enjoy delicious meals alongside live entertainment.
Beyond its role as a venue, AJ’s Place holds personal significance for Alan and Henderson, who have integrated their passions and backgrounds into the business. Alan, a culinary school graduate with a longstanding music career, found the opportunity to combine his skills and aspirations upon learning about the availability of the Lindsay Boulevard location.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community,” Henderson shared. “In addition to hosting diverse acts, we’re thrilled to announce that AJ’s Place will host its first wedding in August, reflecting our commitment to accommodating special events and celebrations.”
As a family-operated business, AJ’s Place also involves Henderson’s children, who contribute to daily operations and customer service. The couple emphasizes a customer-centric approach, accommodating special requests and ensuring a personalized experience for every visitor.
Looking ahead, Alan and Henderson plan to celebrate AJ’s Place’s success with a grand opening event in the near future. “Despite the busy schedule with bookings, we’re eager to mark this milestone and thank everyone who has supported us,” Henderson added.
