PLANO, Texas:According to Plano police, a woman who is accused of striking a girl as she was walking to school and then leaving in her car had previously dropped off a child at the same school.

What We Know: Zulma Beltran, 49, of Richardson was taken into custody by police on Thursday at approximately 1:00 p.m.

Beltran was accused with a felony—collision involving personal injury.

What They’re Saying: About a week after the event, Beltran became a suspect, said to Officer Andrae Smith.

“When we posted this on social media, our community showed up and showed out,” Smith stated.

Smith added that in order to ascertain whether a car that fit the description had ever been to Wilson Middle School, where the girl was strolling, police looked through the school’s cameras.

Beltran had just returned from dropping off a child at the school, it turned out.

Smith stated that the child who was struck “was in the right every step of the way, from the moment she left home for school, entered the crosswalk, got hit by an individual who didn’t care about her wellbeing.”

The Backstory: On December 10, while the 12-year-old girl was crossing Westridge Drive on her way to Wilson Middle School, she was struck by an SUV, as shown on CCTV.

A car that looks to be a Buick Enclave is shown in the footage hitting the girl, backing up, and then driving off. As she is flung several feet, the girl screams. She is heard sobbing as she stands up and hobbles off to school.

FOX 4 was informed by the girl’s relatives that she was not gravely injured. After arriving at school that morning, she informed her school resource officer about the incident.

Beltran was already recognized by police as the driver, and they said that she told them what she had done.
