Wild Neighbors: Boise Residents Reflect on Foothill Wildlife After Recent Incident

The Tranquil neighborhood of Columbia Village in Boise witnessed a natural spectacle that served as a poignant reminder of the area’s wildlife diversity. According to Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG), a white-tailed deer fell victim to a mountain lion near the intersection of E. Grand Forest Drive and S. Snapdragon Place on the evening of June 30.

The incident, though unsettling, underscores the fact that Boiseans share their habitat with diverse wildlife, including mountain lions. IDFG took immediate action, notifying residents through door hangers and local announcements to ensure awareness and safety measures.

Brian Pearson, Regional Communications Manager at IDFG, reassured the public that such occurrences, while rare, are part of living in Idaho’s natural environment. He emphasized that the mountain lion showed no signs of habituation to humans, thereby minimizing any immediate threat to public safety.

“Most of Idaho is mountain lion habitat, and the Boise foothills are no exception,” Pearson stated. He urged residents to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, advocating for responsible coexistence with wildlife to mitigate potential encounters.

Since July 1, there have been no further sightings of the mountain lion in Columbia Village. IDFG continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages residents to refer to their “Living with Mountain Lions” brochure for comprehensive guidance on wildlife safety.
