Texas’ ArlingtonVideo of a man beating on doors at an Arlington motel and threatening a visitor with a knife before officers used lethal force was made public by the police.
What We Know
It took place at the Motel 6 off North Collins Street close to AT&T Stadium early on November 27.
According to Chief Al Jones, police had earlier been called to a neighboring mall where people had seen a man hurling objects and kicking trash cans.
Arlington police fatally shoot man holding motel guest at knifepoint
When a man with a knife began banging on motel doors and acting strangely, police were called to the scene. A bleeding motel guest was being held at knifepoint by a man when cops arrived and heard calls for assistance.
Until they received a second complaint about the same individual hammering on the doors of the nearby motel, the officers were unable to locate anyone.
Both police body cameras and motel security cameras provided the video footage that were made public on Monday.
As officers pass by to look into the initial report, they depict Edgar Garcia, 34, cowering among cars in the motel parking lot.
Garcia then approaches a side entrance of the motel and tries to smash the glass with something that looks like masonry. When that fails, he goes to a different door and keeps kicking and banging until a visitor allows him in.
We’ve had a conversation with this visitor. Mr. Garcia was unknown to him. He informed the authorities that he was going to the parking lot to go to his car. Chief Jones stated, “He opened the door after hearing the banging and spotting the man.”
After entering the motel, Garcia kicked doors as he ascended to the third level.
A visitor opened his door to check what was happening after being awakened by all the kicking and banging.
Garcia pushed his way into the room and brandished a knife at that point, according to Chief Jones. The two males can be seen struggling in the footage.
As this was happening, police officers showed up to the hotel. They heard the victim screaming for assistance as they ascended to the third level.
They can be seen attempting to kick in the victim’s door in the video.
“Once the motel guest opened the door and the officers could see Mr. Garcia holding the knife, they gave multiple commands to drop it, and he didn t comply,” Jones stated.
Additionally, Garcia is heard in the video saying to the officers, “I have a hostage.” Officers are told he wants them to shoot.
Garcia was hit by multiple shots from both officers’ service firearms. At the hospital, he passed away.
Following the shooting, the two cops were put on regular administrative leave. Since then, both have resumed their regular duties.
The battle resulted in multiple cuts on the motel guest’s arms. After receiving hospital treatment, he was discharged.

What We Don’t Know
Garcia’s intentions remain unknown.
He didn’t know the victim, according to the police.
“Mr. Garcia’s attack seems to have been impulsive. We don’t know why he came into the room or what his intention was. Chief Jones stated, “We have not ruled out the possibility that he was under the influence of drugs at the time.”
Police anticipate further information from a toxicology report.
The criminal probe is still going on.
