Temperatures in North Texas are plummeting due to a powerful cold front.
TxDOT is already making preparations since snow or a wintry mix is predicted for the end of the week.
TxDOT Treating Roads
TxDOT is working to treat roads before any precipitation late in the week, even though the first part of the week is predicted to be dry.
On Friday, brine was applied to all of Dallas’ and Fort Worth’s main thoroughfares.
“That brine will dilute the precipitation when it falls, lowering the freezing point. “We’re attempting to stop that ice from solidifying on the road,” stated Val Lopez, TxDOT’s Fort Worth District Public Information Officer.
When the snow or wintry mix arrives later this week, staff will be prepared to respond because the roads have already been pre-treated.
“When the incoming weather does roll in, our focus is really going to shift to the elevated surfaces, the bridges and the overpasses,” Lopez stated.
Crews are already working 12-hour shifts until the cold weather ends, according to TxDOT.
This comprises workers capable of fighting ice, clearing snow, and, if needed, laying down additional sand brine.
North Texans Prepare for Cold Snap
On Sunday, residents in North Texas went out to gather firewood for their houses.
On Sunday night, Cody White and his family were among the numerous people gathering firewood at the Valero gas station located on Glade Road in Colleyville.
“You never know with Texas what might happen,” White stated.
Andrew Rampley makes sure his mother has enough firewood for the week because of the winter conditions in previous years.
“A couple of years ago when it all froze over, it was quite a situation so trying to avoid all that now,” Rampley added.
Some people may find the cold to be an unwanted visitor, while others like a hint of winter.
“Give me a couple of days and I ll probably change my tune, but for right now this actually feels pretty good, like winter is actually here,” Dean Minchillo remarked. “It ll be hot again before we know it and we ll be complaining about the summer so just enjoy it while we have it.”
