Texas’s Fort WorthOne of the highest infant death rates in the country is found in a community in south Fort Worth. To solve the issue, Baylor Scott and White is collaborating with the city.

At Baylor Scott and White All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, a new program called Team Birth will prioritize improving maternal health care where it is most needed.
It is supported by physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who have received new training and adopted fresh viewpoints, such as the understanding that a woman’s prenatal care may change based on her poverty, ethnicity, level of education, and other factors.
OBGYN Dr. Jaime Erwin stated, “Disparities exist and they exist right here in our backyard.” Women are losing their lives. We must take action because women of color are dying.

According to a startling figure, Tarrant County has had at least six newborn deaths for every 1,000 live births on average during the last ten years.
Over the years, infant mortality rates have been among the highest in the country, especially in the south side zip code of 76104.

“They’re terrible. For Black mothers in particular, we rank among the worst in the country. Given the volume of families seeking care in the hospital district, I believe the data is complex, particularly in 76104. However, if you consider what we do in this city very carefully. Together, we take on challenging tasks,” Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker stated.
Charles Williams, president of BSW All Saints Medical Center, stated that it is an issue that requires discussion.
And that’s the goal of Team Birth.
“By doing this we are shining light on something that needs to be looked at and we need to fix it,” he stated.
“There are plenty of mothers who come to this hospital that have never had prenatal care and a clinician needs to meet them where they are,” Mayor Parker stated.
