The suspect in Terrell police officer Jacob Candanoza’s death is still being sought by the police. Following a confrontation with a man in a gray Chevy Colorado pickup truck, Candanoza was shot in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel on Sunday night.
An ATerrell police officer was shot and died in a motel parking lot late on Sunday night while on duty in Kautzman County.
Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, was shot at approximately 11 p.m. in the Super 8 Motel parking lot on the 1600 block of TX-34 South, close to Interstate 20, according to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the police, Candanoza got into a fight with a man in a pickup truck in the parking lot.
The perpetrator fled the scene in a gray Chevrolet Colorado pickup with Mississippi license plates, driving east on I-20 after shooting Candanoza during the altercation.
After being brought to a hospital in Forney, Candanoza passed away from his wounds.
After spotting the truck close to the border between Van Zandt and Kaufman counties, deputies began pursuing it. After crashing the car, the suspect took off on foot and went into a forested area.
The culprit is still being sought.
Along with local police and sheriff’s deputies, the Texas Rangers are spearheading the investigation.
The Terrell Police Chief characterized Candanoza as a husband and father of a small child during a press conference early Monday at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Forney.
On Monday, a march honoring the dead officer is planned around 6 a.m.
Candanoza is the first Terrell police officer murdered in the line of duty since 1980, according to the nonprofit Officer Down Memorial Page.
Since July 2024, Candanoza has been a member of the Terrell police force.
