For the second consecutive year, South Oak Cliff, located in Arlington, Texas, lost the state championship.

At AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Friday night, Richmond Randle won the 5A Division II championship by defeating the Golden Bears 38-35.

Randle was outscored 461-221 by South Oak Cliff, who dominated the stat sheet, yet the Lions won the game because of poor special teams play.

Randle scored after Sincere Timpson took the first kickoff 82 yards.

South Oak Cliff came back from a 10-point deficit at the half.

Mikail Trotter, a running back, ran 75 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.

South Oak Cliff took the lead when Damond Williams rushed for an 85-yard touchdown on the Golden Bears’ subsequent drive.

Randle’s Sean Smith ran back the team’s second kickoff return for a touchdown as the game went back and forth. The Lions now lead 38-35 after the score.

As the clock ran out, South Oak Cliff missed a 44-yard field goal that would have tied the game.

The Golden Bears were participating in the 5A Division II title game for the fourth consecutive year.

South Oak Cliff fell to Port Neches-Groves in the previous year’s championship game, despite winning the state championship in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons.
