Houston
The worst is what Houston is expecting.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, and it will be in force for the Houston region from 6 p.m. on Monday through 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
As early as 10 p.m. on Monday, freezing rain, light sleet, and a little chilly drizzle could begin there.
Between midnight and roughly nine in the morning on Tuesday, the region may receive two to four inches of snow.
Dylan Federico, the weather meteorologist for FOX 4, provides an update on the forecast’s cold temperatures and potential snow flurries.
Reasons to be concerned:
Houston rarely experiences snowfall, and this storm may be the worst to hit the area in recent memory.
According to the NWS, there is a serious risk to people’s lives and property nearby.
Houston’s two main airports and schools will also be closed on Tuesday.
In anticipation of dangerous weather, George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport both declared that flight operations will be halted Tuesday.
Passengers are negotiating with the airlines to rearrange their flights for free.
Houston Public Works and the Texas Department of Transportation have been hard at work pretreating the roadways.
According to Oncor, staff are ready to assist electricity providers in the Houston area if necessary.
Austin
Additionally, Austin is under a Winter Storm Warning, with a chance of up to 2 inches of snow.
According to TxDOT, a brine solution has already been sprayed on roads, bridges, and underpasses where ice and snow could build up.
To assist in clearing the path, Austin is sending out more snowplows.
Gulf Coast
Major cities from Texas to the Florida Panhandle to the Carolinas may have detectable snowfall from the same uncommon winter storm.
The FOX Forecast Center predicts that almost all Gulf Coast states will receive between one and three inches of snow, with areas in eastern Texas, central Louisiana, and western Mississippi possibly seeing up to eight inches.
Parts of southern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle may be in for a more serious catastrophe. Warm air will be drawn in over the Southeast as the low-pressure system gets stronger.
Warmer air will cause snowflakes to melt as they fall from the sky, giving them the chance to either refreeze at the surface or turn into rain.
Winter Storm watches: Rare snow, ice forecast from Texas to Florida
As an unusual winter storm threatens the southern United States, preparations are being made from Houston to Atlanta.
The FOX Forecast Center currently predicts between 0.10 and 0.25 inches of ice, but that might change.
In the South and Southeast, six states have been placed under Winter Storm Watches.
The Winter Storm Watches, which will take effect on Monday, cover major cities such as Atlanta, Montgomery, Alabama, Houston, and New Orleans.
Reasons to be concerned:
Significant effects are also anticipated, such as some power outages and delays in traffic on regional highways and airports.
The Houston office of the National Weather Service advised people to postpone all travel if at all possible. “If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.”
Additionally, drivers are advised to give themselves extra time to arrive safely and to provide plenty of space between cars.
