DallasOn Sunday afternoon, large crowds of demonstrators flocked to North Texas to voice their opposition to recent deportations in the US.
While those who did show up claimed they wanted to express their support for their parents, friends, and the immigrant community, protesters who talked to FOX 4 outside Dallas City Hall said they had anticipated a larger attendance.
Downtown Dallas Protest
The Next Generation Action Network, a nonprofit, coordinated the demonstration on Sunday.
The group protested the recent spike in ICE raids targeting immigrants in North Texas and around the United States for the second consecutive week.
The demonstration outside Dallas City Hall on Sunday afternoon drew dozens of participants.
What they’re saying:
Gabrielya Barrera, 18, stated that she intends to speak up for others who are unable to do so.
“It’s my turn to fight for my parents because my sign indicates that they fought for me. That only indicates to me that they came here to provide a better life for my sister and me, and now I’m here to defend their rights,” Barrera stated.
The uncertainty about the future of her loved ones pushed 16-year-old Acuarela Jimenez to tears.
“I worry about my folks. Many people lose their brothers and parents to deportation, and it’s just unfair,” Jimenez added.
The teenager claims that she experiences similar anxieties at school.
“I m scared for my friends, I know some of them are not from here and it s not fair, it s really not fair,” Jimenez added.
She claims that she wants to demonstrate her support for all immigrants.
“We will always be united because we are in this together. It doesn’t matter who you are—Mexico, Guatemala, any other nation, or an immigrant—we’re all in this together,” Jimenez stated.
Arlington City Hall Protest
On Sunday, there was another demonstration in Arlington.
On the steps of City Hall, demonstrators gathered.
What they’re saying:
When Marie Esquiel was a newborn, her father was deported. She claims to be aware of the emotional upheaval it causes.
She came to offer her assistance.
“You know, everyone is afraid, and nobody wants to go back to their old haunts. Esquiel stated, “No one really wants to go to school anymore.” “At this point, it s not just about keeping families together, it s about getting our rights back.”
