Drug overdoses are becoming a serious issue in New York. Last year, more than 3,000 people died from overdoses, with 89% of these deaths linked to fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. Now, there’s a new and even more dangerous drug making its way into the streets: carfentanil. This drug is raising alarm bells among health officials and law enforcement.
Carfentanil is an extremely potent synthetic drug that is so powerful it can sedate an elephant. Just a tiny amount—about the size of a grain of salt—can be deadly for a human. In New York City, there have been at least seven overdose deaths connected to carfentanil this year alone. Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan is very worried that the number of overdoses could increase significantly. She warned, “The street drug market has never been deadlier than it is today. You may buy something that will kill you.”
Carfentanil is mainly manufactured in China and enters the United States through Mexico. Brennan explained that undercover agents are working hard to find out where this drug is coming from and who is selling it. She stated, “If it gets out of control as fentanyl has, overdoses could go up even higher than they are now, and we’re at record numbers now. A tiny amount of it, a grain, can kill someone.”
This dangerous drug has been found in all five boroughs of New York City, but the most significant amount has been seized in Brooklyn, particularly in neighborhoods like Bushwick.
During one seizure, officials found bags that contained carfentanil mixed with other drugs such as cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin. Brennan emphasized, “It’s not the people who use the drugs who are choosing it. They don’t know they’re getting carfentanil mixed into their drugs that will kill them. It’s coming from the sellers.”
The rising number of overdose cases has prompted health departments at both the city and state levels to issue public health alerts. These alerts warn people about the risks of using this new drug, which is being added to other already dangerous substances.
Brennan highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Fentanyl kills quickly, but 100 times more powerful carfentanil kills much more quickly.” This alarming fact underscores the urgency of addressing the presence of carfentanil in New York.
The danger of carfentanil extends beyond drug users. First responders and law enforcement officials are also at risk. Even touching the drug by accident can pose a serious threat to their health. People who come into contact with carfentanil can experience severe symptoms, including dizziness, clammy skin, and even heart failure. This is not just another drug crisis; it is a dangerous situation that could lead to loss of life.
In response to this crisis, officials are increasing their efforts to combat the distribution of carfentanil and protect the community. There is a strong emphasis on educating the public about the risks associated with this drug and how it is often hidden in other substances. People need to understand that using street drugs can come with deadly surprises, and they should avoid illicit substances altogether.
