McKINNEY, Texas:Plans for the third commercial airport in North Texas are being pursued by the city of McKinney.
A zoning amendment for 280 acres of land adjacent to McKinney National Airport was unanimously accepted by the city council.
A 45,000-square-foot passenger terminal with five gates, parking lots, a taxiway, and additional runway equipment is planned to occupy the location.
Expanding the current airport from general aviation to commercial air traffic is McKinney’s objective.
According to the mayor, the city is negotiating obligations with two airlines. Nondisclosure agreements prevented him from naming such carriers.
“At the moment, we are working on an infrastructure design. On that, we’ll start building in early 25. Mayor George Fuller stated, “We do anticipate that we will have commercial passenger service flights departing in 2026.”
For many years, the project has been in development.
Voters rejected the initial idea for a $300 million commercial terminal that was financed by $200 million in property tax bonds.
Proposal could bring commercial flights to McKinney airport
A multi-million dollar expansion at McKinney National Airport will be put to a vote by McKinney citizens. Commercial flights may begin operating in Collin County as a result of the initiative.
According to the new plan, the existing airport’s sales tax bonds will be used to finance the construction of a $60 million terminal. Although it is smaller, it will be constructed with future growth in mind.
“My constituents are generally quite excited, despite the fact that there is undoubtedly a vocal minority on social media. “Excited about the economic impact and the ease of having flights here in McKinney,” Fuller stated.
Since the commercial airlines will not be flying over the surrounding residences, which is something that the FAA controls, the mayor argued that worries about noise are baseless.
Regarding traffic, he stated that it is far less than that which an H-E-B store generates.
“On a Saturday, 25,000 people travel to H-E-B in the center of our town. “There are 1,200 people traveling to the airport, which is located on the outskirts of town and is accessible by three major highways,” Fuller stated.
The mayor also made a suggestion that McKinney will require an airport for additional reasons.
“Another project I am not at liberty to talk about yet but will be a destination people will fly in from around the country to experience,” he stated.
