What We Know: Mesquite police officers were looking into a suspicious individual near a building along I-30 and Sorrento Drive on the morning of December 16, just before three in the morning.
Police heard multiple gunshots in the vicinity while they were conducting their investigation.
The officers can be seen scrambling for cover on dash and body camera footage.
According to Mesquite police, they thought they were being fired upon because the gunshots was so close.
After witnessing a speeding car leave on Gus Thomasson Road, the officer attempted to reverse course and return to the interstate in the opposite way.
However, according to the authorities, the driver lost control of the car and crashed. Three males leaped from the car and started to flee.
One of the suspects is heard being yelled at to get down by an officer. The Mesquite officer reported that he saw the guy reaching for a gun as he kept running.
The officer can be heard shouting, “Get on the ground or I’ll f***ing shoot you,”
The suspect was then struck by three shots fired by the officer.
Police said they located a pistol on the suspect.
Another gun was discovered inside the car, and two more were discovered on the ground close to it.
The driver of the vehicle, Montrell Johnson, was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, while another passenger, Landon Watson, was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. The suspect who was shot, Edward Williams, was charged with avoiding arrest.
It is possible to file further charges.
Williams was shot by a five-year veteran of the force.
