DallasVolunteers are making every effort to assist some of the most needy residents of North Texas in getting ready for the winter storm.
Dallas County Meals on Wheels
In Dallas County, the Visiting Nurses Association offers a program called Meals on Wheels.
Approximately 5,200 homebound elders and disabled persons are served by the organization every weekday throughout the county. That’s on top of those receiving hospice care.
Approximately 300 staff members and volunteers are needed to distribute those meals every day.
The VNA prepared extra meals and provided heaters to individuals who needed them on Wednesday since they didn’t want to risk having those people on the roads on Thursday and Friday.
“Today, we are preparing the hot supper that was scheduled to be served to them. Additionally, each customer will receive a breakfast bag. We try to get ready for the holidays and bad weather in the fall, so every customer gets a five-pack of our shelf-stable meals to eat on Thursday and Friday,” said Jennifer Austin, executive director of Development and Communications for the VNA.
Dallas County volunteers will still call their clients to see how they are doing even if they won’t be delivering food.
In order to respond quickly to any situations, staff will also be working remotely.
What People Are Saying: One volunteer in Dallas County is Andrew Astmann.
“You develop a rapport with a handful of your clients,” he stated. “It s a good service that a lot of people need.”
Richard Henry and Maria Gonzalez expressed their gratitude for the food and the opportunity to socialize.
“People tend to forget about you as you become older. Therefore, it’s crucial to know that there are people out there that genuinely care and give of their time.

Meals on Wheels Collin County
Due to the possibility of snow and ice, Collin County’s Meals on Wheels program will be temporarily halted on Thursday and Friday.
There, volunteers prepared seniors for the storm by delivering power outage kits and emergency shelf-stable meals.
To keep everyone safe, the kits come with supplies including batteries, power banks, and flashlights.
“We prioritize the safety of our seniors and volunteers, and halting meal deliveries during dangerous weather conditions allows us to focus on proactive support,” said Marzella Tyson, CEO. “Thank you to our community of supporters who have helped equip our senior neighbors with meals and emergency resources ahead of this bad weather.”
How You Can Help: In order to provide elders with more cold weather services, the organization is also seeking additional volunteers on Saturday at 9 a.m.
“We want to remind our community to stay safe, stay informed, and reach out to us if you know or see a senior in need,” Tyson stated.
