We know:

An AI weapons detection system called Evolv informed Mansfield Legacy High personnel on Friday morning that a pupil had a firearm in their bookbag.

Britney Fortner, the district’s director of safety and security, clarified, “Students go through it in the morning.” “Our visitors also pass through, and it just searches for weapons that could be brought into our campuses.”

Fortner explained the following steps.

“That was identified by an assistant principal that was doing that further screening, which is part of our standard process on campus.”

When the weapon was discovered, a policeman was in the lobby, and the student was taken into custody.

No specific threats were made against any other staff members or students, according to Mansfield ISD.

Evolv Weapons Detection System

It’s not just a technique for detecting metal. A step closer to a safe campus is the new protocol for all high school students in Mansfield ISD.

Overview:

The advanced system keeps an eye on the front door and other entrances using artificial intelligence and a weapons detection sensor. Some entertainment venues employ the same technology.

Following the incident at Timberview High School in 2021 that left two students and a teacher injured, Mansfield ISD implemented the Evolv system at all of its high schools in 2023.

For his attempted capital murder, the shooter is currently serving a 12-year sentence.

Although Mansfield ISD spends roughly $40,000 annually on Evolv, school administrators felt the cost is well worth it, particularly in light of Friday’s circumstances.

“We are very thankful for Mansfield ISD putting safety and security as one of our main priorities in the district.”
