Manhattan Shooting Incident: Two NYPD Sergeants Shot While Responding to Armed Robbery

Two NYPD sergeants were shot while responding to an armed robbery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Thursday afternoon, officials said. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said one sergeant was shot in the groin, and the other was grazed in the leg.

Kenny mentioned that one officer was expected to be released on Thursday night while the other was being held for observation. However, both are expected to make a full recovery, officials assured.

“I’m relieved to say that our officers are both in good, stable condition, and we expect them to make a full recovery,” NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban said at a news conference at Bellevue Hospital on Thursday night.

Kenny detailed that 22-year-old Joshua Dorsett was caught on video entering a second-floor Mahjong parlor at 91 Canal St. He was waving a gun and demanding purses from women shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Kenny explained that the two sergeants responded to a 911 call and pursued Dorsett on foot. Moments later, near Delancey and Eldridge streets, Dorsett pulled a .45 semi-automatic pistol from his pants and fired a single shot, hitting both officers.

Kenny noted that the two sergeants and other responding officers restrained Dorsett after the shot. Mayor Eric Adams praised the sergeants, who officials said have been on the force for 16 and 11 years. He also expressed gratitude to the hospital staff for their prompt care.

“The staff responded quickly when speaking to the two officers and their family members,” Adams said. We just want to thank them personally for putting their lives on the line.” Dorsett’s attorney did not provide a comment.
