Idahoans encouraged to celebrate MLK Day at state Capitol with ceremony, service project donations

The Idaho Capitol Building in Boise is hosting a public celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. Ceremonies will take place on the second floor of the Statehouse’s rotunda between noon and one o’clock.

For the event, Lt. Gov. Scott Bedke will accompany Mamie Oliver, Ph.D., the Idaho Department of Labor announced in a press release.

According to the announcement, Oliver is an author, psychotherapist, educator, and ordained preacher. She coordinated internships at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa and was a tenured professor of social work.

According to the release, Bedke and Oliver will be joined by the Common Ground Community Chorus, the Oinkari Basque Dancers, the Boise Chinese Traditional Dance Group, Danza Azteca Tonatiu, Odissi Natya Sala Boise, and the Boise State University Trumpet Studio, which is directed by Derek Ganong.Meals on Wheels, Boise Community Schools, and the Boise State University Food Pantry will all benefit from a service project table hosted by Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism.

To support the organizations, Idahoans are invited to bring contribution goods and design cards during the ceremony.

Items that are required include:

  • children s underwear sizes 6-8, 10-12, 14-16 (S, M and L);
  • reusable water bottles;
  • breakfast bars or granola bars;
  • fruit cups or fruit snacks;
  • and cereal or oatmeal.

The celebration, known as Idaho Human Rights Day in the state, has been observed in Idaho for 38 years this year.
