Idaho Democrats announce the death of former Pocatello legislator Elaine Smith

Elaine Smith, a former state representative, passed away, the Idaho Democratic Party said in a news statement Friday.

Smith, who was born in Gooding and raised in Pocatello, was the chairwoman of the Idaho House’s minority caucus and represented Legislative District 29 in eastern Idaho for ten terms. In 2020, she announced her retirement from the Legislature. The reason of death was not stated.

“From nearly two decades as a state lawmaker to her long career supporting education and building partnerships in Pocatello, her extraordinary dedication to her community and state was evident in everything she did,” said Lauren Necochea, chairwoman of the Idaho Democratic Party, in a press release.

Smith, according to Necochea, was a dedicated worker for her constituents and a sympathetic listener.

As chair of the House minority caucus, she led with grace and intelligence, and her support of working people, public lands, and education had a long-lasting effect on Idaho, according to Necochea. From improving school sports concussion procedures to safeguarding kids left in hot cars, Elaine stood up for the weak and relentlessly promoted sensible solutions.

According to Necochea, Smith worked on finding bipartisan answers to Idaho’s problems.

According to Necochea, her service was motivated by her conviction that collaboration and bipartisanship might advance Idaho. Even in a politically divisive environment, Elaine reminded us of the value of fostering cooperation and bridging gaps. We shall all continue to be inspired by her moral fortitude and dedication to what was best for Idaho.

Smith’s family and friends received condolences and prayers from Necochea and the Idaho Democratic Party, she added.

Pocatello native and District 29 state senator James Ruchti also released a message regarding Smith’s passing.

According to the press release, Elaine was concerned for her people. Pocatellans visit Boise to lobby the Legislature on significant matters throughout each session. Elaine would find time for them, no matter how exhausted or busy she was.

The Idaho legislative directory states that Smith earned her bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University after graduating from Meridian High School. According to the directory, she attended Methodist church and was active in numerous local groups during her lifetime, such as the NAACP, Southeast Idaho Retired Educators, American Legion Auxiliary, and Pocatello Chamber of Commerce.
