Texas’s Fort WorthLast Monday, Fort Worth police made video of an officer-involved shooting public. There have been three police shootings in the city this year, and this is only one of them.
In an attempt to be transparent, the department is making footage and case records available, according to Sgt. Leah Waggoner.
“I am aware that within the past few weeks, a number of occurrences have occurred. For all of us, it has been an extremely difficult period. Additionally, we are aware that the community is seeking answers, and we plan to provide them,” she stated.
Jan. 9 FWPD officer-involved shooting
The backstory
While many individuals in North Texas were coping with the snow and ice last Thursday, this shooting took place.
Officers were summoned to a residence on Seafield Lane at approximately 6:30 p.m. due to a domestic dispute, according to Sgt. Wagoner.
According to a woman, her boyfriend—later identified as Cameron Leverett, age 31—fired multiple bullets outside the house while intoxicated. She had gone to make a 911 call at a neighbor’s residence.
Fort Worth police investigating officer-involved shooting
An officer-involved shooting occurred on the northwest side of Fort Worth on Thursday night, and the police are looking into it.
Sgt. Wagner reported that upon arrival, the cops surrounded the house and attempted to summon Leverett to come out. They heard gunfire coming from inside the house throughout that period.
“Leverett exited the home and began to fire his weapon at officers,” she stated.
Leverett was struck by three officers who fired back.
He is still in serious condition after being brought to the hospital.
Officers were unharmed.
Next steps:
One count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving family violence and seven charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public official will be added to Leverett’s Tarrant County jail booking if he recovers.
According to the police, they had visited his house a week prior and do have a history with him.
In order to conduct an internal inquiry, the three officers who fired at him were put on regular administrative leave.
Since then, they have resumed their usual duties.
Bodycam video released
A portion of the Jan. 9, 2025, officer-involved shooting on Seafield Lane is captured on video released by the Fort Worth police department.
The 911 call from Leverett’s girlfriend opens the just made public footage. Later, she is captured on tape conversing with police and responding to their inquiries regarding the kinds of firearms in the home.
The officers heard multiple gunshots coming from inside the house as they were speaking with her.
Officers are shown on three separate cameras telling Leverett to come out of the residence and reveal his hands. When he emerges outdoors, there is a gunfight.
Although Leverett isn’t seen explicitly pointing his gun toward the cops in the footage, it does show the handgun on the snow afterwards.
3 officer-involved shootings in 1 week
Overview:
So far this year, three shootings have involved Fort Worth police officers.
Officers murdered a guy who charged at them with knives early on Wednesday morning in addition to the incident on January 9.
Later that day, they opened fire on a man who was threatening individuals outside an apartment leasing office. He was arrested after not being struck.
“We’ve had many instances in the last week or so where officers have had to deal with potentially lethal threats from individuals brandishing knives or firearms. Chief Neil Noakes reported that cops were being shot at on several occasions. “No one wants to begin 2025 in that manner. However, I hope it serves as a reminder to everyone of the risks that come with this line of work and the fact that officers never know what they’ll encounter on any given call.”
What they’re saying:
Chief Noakes expressed his pride in his officers’ handling of the situation. He claimed that they were simultaneously brave and kind.
“They even said, We want to get you help,” in an attempt to speak with this individual. While they were there, they heard shots coming from the residence many times,” he claimed. However, when the man left the house and started shooting at my cops, they were confronted with a lethal threat. They then carried out their training as well as my expectations of them. In every house in this community, they kept themselves and everyone else safe.
However, the chief stated that he hopes 2025 slows down.
He does not want his officers to be regularly threatened with death.
