Former Boise State football coach Dan Hawkins has returned to the Gem State, but this time, he’s teaming up with his son. Hawkins, who led the Broncos from 2001 to 2005, has joined his son Cody’s coaching staff at Idaho State University. He’ll serve as the Director of Player and Staff Development, bringing his wealth of experience and expertise to the Bengals’ football program.
Dan Hawkins, 63, stepped down from his role as head coach at UC Davis last November. According to a press release from UC Davis, he resigned to “pursue other interests and spend more time with family.” During his seven seasons with the Aggies, Hawkins achieved a commendable 44-31 record. In his new position at Idaho State, he will focus on mentoring players and staff, as well as assisting in game planning, strategy, and recruitment.
In a statement, Dan Hawkins expressed his excitement about his new role: “We have been fortunate to learn many valuable lessons over the years, and it is rewarding to be able to share my experience with staff and players alike. I am looking forward to helping Cody and (athletic director) Pauline (Thiros) continue to build a program Idaho State is proud of.”
Cody Hawkins, who took over as head coach at Idaho State last year, led the Bengals to a 3-8 record. He is thrilled to have his father join the team, stating, “My father has been a fantastic role model and my greatest mentor for as long as I can remember. He is a reflection of the person I try to be every day, and he helped formulate many of the core values that we try to incorporate into our program. His wisdom and character will help our team and coaching staff to maximize their potential on and off the field.”
Dan Hawkins has a distinguished coaching career, having been named national coach of the year at Willamette University, Boise State, and UC Davis. In 1997, he led Willamette to its first and only appearance in the Division III national title game. At Boise State, he achieved the program’s first undefeated regular season at the FBS level in 2004. He helped the Broncos win four Western Athletic Conference championships, leaving with an impressive 53-11 record.
In 2018, Hawkins was named the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year after leading UC Davis to the FCS quarterfinals and a No. 6 ranking in his second year as head coach.
Returning to Idaho, Dan Hawkins brings a legacy of success and a deep understanding of the game.
