What People Are Saying: Jeremiah Dabney, Dabney’s brother, stated that when his sister first told him about what had happened, he didn’t believe her.

“She should stop playing,” I said. However, she repeated it often, and I could tell it was serious. He said, “I knew something happened.”

All he wants to remember now are the positive times.

“He was such an energetic kid, such a lighthearted kid, just a bright kid,” Jeremiah Dabney remarked.

Given that no arrests have been made thus far and that the incident occurred so close to the holidays, the family is finding it difficult to process what happened.

“Because in all honesty, when you get ready to have the services and you bury your child and you still don t have that closure, it s hard,” said Tamara Syas, the aunt of Dabney.

In February, the Dabney family relocated from New Orleans to McKinney.

People have been adding to the expanding monument at the junction where the incident occurred all weekend. Knowing how many lives he impacted in such a short period of time provides solace to the family.
