The grant is one of just 54 projects nationwide that are receiving funding via the Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program.
According to Dallas Councilman Adam Bazaldua, the Fair Park community park will contribute to making up for historical wrongs. In order to construct the parking lot close to the Dos Equis Pavilion, eminent domain was used.

Sneak Peek: Here’s what the new 18-acre park at Fair Park will look like
One of the biggest playgrounds in the metro area is part of the updated designs for the new 18-acre community park at Fair Park, among other features.
A portion of the parking lot will be reclaimed for a green area in the new park, which will have a kids’ play area, a water feature, a pavilion for events, and a sizable grass for events like outdoor movies and fitness classes.
“The fence will come down along Fitzhugh, creating a welcoming entryway for the surrounding communities of Fair Park,” Bazaldua stated. “The new park will serve as a catalyst attracting more opportunities and investments to South Dallas while creating a vibrant space where residents can live, work, play, and connect.”
Funding for the park project is still $9 million short. However, the grant alters the course in response to allegations that Oak View Group, Fair Park’s for-profit operator, misappropriated some of the funds given to Fair Park First, a nonprofit organization, especially for the community park.
The Dallas Foundation and Fair Park First are now working together to handle donations and make sure they are put to the right use.
