DALLAS—ICE and other government agencies have played a major role in President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

In an effort to allay the anxieties of the immigrant population, some Republican officials in Texas are calling for increased involvement from the local police.

It seems that the temporary police chief in Dallas is telling undocumented immigrants that they shouldn’t be afraid to report crimes due to their status.

Some undocumented immigrants in the community may be afraid to report crimes to law authorities, even if they are victims, according to Hilda Duarte, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens Council in Oak Cliff.

“They think their immigrant status will be brought up if they call the police or report a crime. “They might be at risk of deportation,” Duarte stated.

According to sources, ICE has a new daily goal in Dallas, and immigration arrests are rising nationwide.

Michael Igo, the interim chief of the Dallas Police Department, issued a video on Wednesday that seemed to reassure members of the undocumented population.

“There are no changes to how the city of Dallas and DPD will provide services,” he stated. “This also means that if you are a victim of a crime, you have the right to report it, regardless of immigration status.”

Over 84 people were taken into custody by ICE in the Dallas area last Sunday.

Since then, ICE’s Dallas section has not disclosed any figures, but it claims to be conducting daily apprehensions.

A Dallas man named Jeering Alcides Godoy Linares was arrested, according to a post on the X account for ICE’s national headquarters. His offenses are listed in the article as assault and avoiding arrest, however it is unclear if he has been found guilty or not.

“I understand that there may be a requirement that they assist ICE or that they assist other entities at the federal level,” Del Carmen added. “That support is already happening. Throughout the state of Texas, we have task teams with federal authorities.

Nonetheless, the president of LULAC claims that even undocumented immigrants who have been abiding by local and state rules are experiencing anxiety in her neighborhood.

“They don t want to be bringing attention to themselves,” she stated.

On Wednesday, the mayor of Austin informed the Texas Tribune that the capital city’s police are not helping federal authorities with the president’s immigration crackdown. It’s unknown if other law enforcement agencies will do the same.
