With more than 23,000 U-Haul rental facilities in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces, DALLAS-U-Haul is able to track where consumers are relocating to and from. According to the 2024 research, Texas remains one of the most desirable states for relocation. According to U-Haul, the DFW Metroplex is a popular destination for its clients, and the metro locations are a recent statistic.
What we know
In 2024, the DFW Metroplex will be the top U-Haul Growth Metro. Five metro areas in Texas made the cut. Houston is ranked ninth, and Austin is ranked fifth. Actually, since 2016, Texas has consistently been first or second among U-Haul Growth States, according to U-Haul.
With Lakeland joined by Palm Bay, Jacksonville, Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers, and Daytona Beach, Florida is home to seven of the top 25 growth metro areas.
All three from North Carolina were in the top 14.
The net increase (or decrease) in the number of customers using one-way U-Haul equipment in a certain state over a given calendar year determines the growth rankings. Every year, well over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer, and U-Box moving container transactions are used to calculate the U-Haul Growth Index.

What they’re saying
Sean Fullerton, president of the U-Haul Company of South Central Dallas, stated, “The Dallas metro area is experiencing unprecedented growth, both within the city and also in suburbs like McKinney, Plano, and Addison.” In the entire metro, the cost of living is likewise incredibly affordable. Wages and earnings have increased due to job development, and many individuals have moved to the area as a result of tax advantages.
The U-Haul Growth Index is a useful indicator of how effectively states and localities are drawing and keeping citizens, even though U-Haul rankings might not be directly correlated with population or economic growth.
By the numbers
In 2024, South Carolina topped the U-Haul Growth Index for the first time, continuing the trend of southern states attracting more one-way U-Haul customers.
The top five states for growth are Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Texas.
Texas, the top growth state for the last three years (2021-23), lost ground to South Carolina, which rose three spots in the rankings. In 2024, roughly 51.7% of all U-Haul movers arriving and departing from Palmetto State were arrivals.
Since 2016, Texas has consistently placed first or second among U-Haul Growth States. Since 2015, Florida has consistently ranked fourth or higher.
New York has its lowest growth ranking in ten years at number 47 on the list.
According to the U-Haul Growth Index, the states with the largest annual increases are Maine (+18), Indiana (+19), and Oklahoma (+30). In 2024, the largest slides occurred in Colorado (-31), Nevada (-24), Wyoming (-22), and New Mexico (-21).
