FRISCO, Texas—Brian Schottenheimer has been appointed by the Dallas Cowboys as their eleventh head coach.

Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, the team made their official announcement regarding their choice for head coach.

Following two in-depth interviews earlier this week, Schottenheimer’s team and the Cowboys eventually reached a consensus on terms Friday night, according to the organization.

According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, “Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” CBS reported. “He is no longer Brian. He is now the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach.

For the past two seasons, Schottenheimer, the son of NFL coaching great Marty Schottenheimer, has been the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

Jeff Kolb of FOX 4 offers his thoughts on the Cowboys’ choice to choose Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach.

Schottenheimer, 51, has never had a head coaching position.

According to the Cowboys, Schottenheimer will be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday at 11 a.m.

For the past three seasons, Schottenheimer has been employed by the Cowboys. In 2022, he joined Mike McCarthy as a consultant.

In 1993, McCarthy made his NFL debut as a coach under Marty Schottenheimer.

Following the 2023 season, Schottenheimer was elevated to the position of offensive coordinator after the Cowboys fired Kellen Moore.

McCarthy was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator when Schottenheimer was in charge.

Dak Prescott had his best season as a professional in Schottenheimer’s first season as head coach. Throughout the season, the Cowboys offense led the league in scoring.

The offensive had trouble in 2024. Due to his injury, Prescott’s season ended in 21st place in terms of scoring.

Additionally interviewed for the position were former New York Jets head coach Robert Sale, Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, and offensive coordinator Kelvin Moore of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Schottenheimer and Moore have both played for the Cowboys before. However, the squad claims “it was Schottenheimer who boasted the much lengthier resume of overall coaching experience between the two though, despite having not called plays in Dallas during the McCarthy era.”
