Burrow, Chase lift Bengals after botched blocked punt by Cowboys in 27-20 Cincinnati victory

Perhaps Cowboys supporters will feel better after watching the heartbreaking loss to the Bengals. Using a “Simpsons” simulcast, Mike Doocy provides us with a recap.

Texas’ ArlingtonThe Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow finally had some relief.

The Dallas Cowboys were reminded of one of the most agonizing times in their history.

The Bengals defeated the Cowboys 27–20 on Monday night after Burrow delivered a 40-yard touchdown throw to Ja’Marr Chase after Dallas fumbled a blocked punt in the last two minutes, giving the ball back to Cincinnati.

On the first play following the two-minute warning, Nick Vigil blocked a punt by Ryan Rehkow of Cincinnati just as the Cowboys were about to regain possession of the ball with the score tied.

When Dallas would have had possession if Amani Oruwariye had let the bouncing ball alone, he attempted to field it. With 1:53 left, Maema Njongmeta of the Bengals recovered at the Cincinnati 43-yard line after Oruwariye was unable to hang on.

With 1:01 remaining, the Bengals (5-8) ended a three-game losing run when Burrow passed to Chase, who ducked by DaRon Bland and ran unharmed the remainder of the way for the lead.

All three of the Bengals’ losses during their second three-game losing streak and seven of their eight losses this season were by seven points or less preceded the team’s second one-score triumph in a perplexing season.

“We needed a break,” claimed Burrow. “We haven t got many this year, but it was nice to get that one and nice to come out of this with a win.”

The backdrop that set up the Burrow-Chase winner was eerily reminiscent of a snowy Thanksgiving Day at Texas Stadium in 1993 for the Cowboys.

December 9, 2024, Arlington, Texas: In the fourth quarter of the Cincinnati Bengals’ game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, Ja’Marr Chase #1 of the team rushes the ball to score a 40-yard game-winning touchdown.

In the closing seconds that would have handed Dallas the victory over Miami, Leon Lett mysteriously slid in on the snow-covered field to attempt to collect a blocked field goal. The Dolphins rallied and won 16–14 with a field goal on the last play.

After missing five games due to a back ailment, Oruwariye made a mistake in his first game back from injured reserve. After the game, Oruwariye was kept away from reporters in the locker room by fellow defensive backs C.J. Goodwin and Jourdan Lewis.

After the block, special teams coach John Fassel urgently beckoned his players to get away from the ball, but Oruwariye never thought twice about attempting to collect it.

“You see why it happened,” stated Mike McCarthy, the coach of the Cowboys. “The ball is there when he turns. And he did something about it. I’ve not watched the video. I witnessed it in real time. It’s undoubtedly a challenging educational experience.

Burrow finished with 369 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were to Chase, and the game-winning touchdown guaranteed him at least 300 yards passing and three touchdowns for the fourth straight game. In that stretch, it was the first triumph.

Chase, who leads the NFL in both receiving yards and touchdowns, with a season-high 14 catches for 177 yards and up to 15 touchdowns. On the decisive play, Chase easily got past Bland.

Chase stated, “Me and Joe were on the same page,” “He threw to my inside shoulder so I can turn upfield after the catch.”

Rico Dowdle ran for a career-high 131 yards and Cooper Rush threw two touchdown passes as the Cowboys (5-8) ended a modest two-game winning streak after dropping five straight games.

Dallas was already unlikely to make it to the playoffs for a fourth straight year, and now it is virtually impossible.

McCarthy stated, “We realize that we put ourselves in a difficult situation.” “This one has to happen tonight. This loss is really disheartening.

With their first series win since 2004, the Bengals snapped a five-game losing streak against the Cowboys.

DeMarvion Overshown, a linebacker with the Cowboys, suffered a right knee injury during the fourth quarter. It was Dallas’ first game since his incredible interception return of 23 yards for a touchdown in their Thanksgiving triumph over the New York Giants, which ended in a score of 27–20.

According to McCarthy, the injury was severe. Due to a damaged ligament in his left knee, Overshown missed his whole rookie season in 2023.

After the game, Burrow was limping, but he insisted that his knee wouldn’t stop him from playing.

“It’s nothing crazy,” Burrow informed them. “I made a few landings on it. Most likely, a bursa (sac). It will hurt. We’ll see.
