Arlington robbery suspect arrested after shootout with police

Texas’ ArlingtonAdditional information regarding the armed robbery that resulted in a gunfight between the suspect and the officers on Friday night was made public by Arlington police.

Arlington police, robbery suspect exchange gunfire

We know:

On Friday, Jan. 10, just before 7 p.m., Arlington police officers responded to a reported armed robbery at a shopping center located at the intersection of Pioneer Parkway and Matlock Road.

According to a 911 caller, two individuals who may have been armed entered the establishment.

Officers surrounded the scene when they got there.

A man was seen leaving the building and sprinting by two officers at the rear entrance of the company.

Another man with a gun in the doorway started shooting at the officers. The officers fired back, firing several times.

The suspect returned to the establishment and attempted to exit through the front door. Officers took him into custody without any problems.

The shooting did not damage the subject or the cops.

Employees inside the company attempted to flee through the rear entrance after the gunfire. Police said the workers had tape bound their hands and legs. None of the workers suffered any injuries.

Kelvin Bivens, 37, is the suspect and has been charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault against a public worker.

Search for second suspect

What is unknown to us:

The second suspect in the heist is being sought by police.

Officers have not disclosed whether they are aware of the identity of the suspect.

Officers on leave

Both of the officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Arlington Police Department rules.

Next steps:

As is police policy, there are several investigations under progress.

To ascertain whether any crimes were committed, the APD Homicide Unit will look into the officer’s choice to use their service weapon.

APD Internal Affairs will conduct an administrative inquiry to ascertain if officers adhered to the correct regulations and procedures.
