The position of housing secretary, which is essential to President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda, was confirmed for Scott Turner on Wednesday.

By a vote of 55-44, the former NFL player, Texas state lawmaker, and senior White House assistant was approved. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Peter Welch of Vermont were the only two Democrats who supported Turner.


Who is Scott Turner?

The backstory

Turner is a former member of the Texas House, a pastor, and a professional mentor.

He went to Richardson’s Pearce High School while growing up in the Dallas area.

After playing football for the University of Illinois, Turner played for the Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, and Washington Redskins in the NFL for a number of years.

He interned for then-Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif, during the off-season. Turner was employed by the congressman full-time after retiring in 2004. Turner made an unsuccessful Republican run in the 50th Congressional District of California in 2006.

Turner ran to represent the newly established 33rd District in the Texas House when his football career ended.

He was a member of the Texas House from 2013 to 2017 for two terms. All of Rockwall County and a portion of Collin County are included in District 33.

President Trump named him director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council in 2019.

Trump nominated Turner to be the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development following his election victory in 2024.

Turner is listed as an associate pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church.

Following former Representative Jack Kemp, who held the position under President George H. W. Bush, Turner will be the second professional football player to hold the position. The only other Black American in Trump’s Cabinet is Turner; the only other Black American in that Cabinet was Ben Carson, who was HUD secretary during Trump’s first term.

What is the Housing and Urban Development Department?

In addition to managing housing for the poorest Americans, HUD is tasked with addressing the country’s housing needs and fair housing legislation.
