We know:
The deadly collision occurred on Highway 281 in Erath County last Friday at approximately 3 p.m.
The DPS crash report states that Hood County resident Karen Huey, 63, “failed to drive in a single lane” while traveling north on 281 and collided with a Cadillac, killing both herself and the other motorist.
The Cadillac was being driven by Watauga resident Jaelen Green, 21, according to investigators. He didn’t make it through the collision.
Nicole Doggett, 22, his girlfriend from Georgetown, was taken to a hospital in Fort Worth after suffering severe injuries.
Watauga Man’s Heroic Actions
What they’re saying:
Doggett’s roommate, Kai Ward, was acquainted with the couple.
“He was a very wonderful man. He claimed to have given Nicole excellent treatment.
As Doggett recovers and grieves, Ward and a group of supporters are there by her side. Although she is getting better medically, he thinks she still has a long and emotional path ahead of her.
Ward thinks Green was attempting to protect Doggett before he passed away.
“The automobile actually lost a lot of control, according to Nicole, and they were struck from behind, with the driver side bearing the brunt of the impact. “Jae was behind the wheel,” he said. “In his last moments, he tried to shield Nicole, and we think that s probably what saved her.”
According to Ward, Doggett looks after her younger brother, and they all find the emotional strain challenging.
“She will no longer have a job. We need to figure out how to take care of her, and we need to take care of him,” he said. “There is simply too much to try to figure out. It’s a lot, and we’re all really young. All we’re doing is our best.”
What is unknown to us:
The reason why Huey lost control and collided with Green and Doggett has not been established by DPS investigators. Additionally, they haven’t said if they think Huey was intoxicated or had a medical problem.
