Before leaving for Austin, Democrats in North Texas held a press conference on Sunday. They are in a familiar situation as the minority in both the House and the Senate, even though it is a new session.
This is an outline of the priorities that lawmakers will set.
Speaker of the House
Different groups of the Texas GOP are fighting for control of the gavel after Dade Phelan withdrew from the campaign to be the state’s House Speaker. Steven Dial of FOX 4 and political scholar Matthew Wilson analyze the campaign.
As lawmakers attempt to choose a new speaker, political fireworks could burst forth on the House floor at any moment.
Dad Phelan, a state representative who has served as speaker since 2021, decided not to run.
Mansfield’s David Cook, the GOP caucus nominee, has a majority of Republican votes but falls short of the 76 required to win.
Some Democrats and Republicans back Lubbock’s Dustin Burrows.
Cook declared that he would not permit Democrats to serve as committee chairs if he were elected.
“Democratic chairmanships are not at issue here. It has to do with working for Texans. In terms of healthcare access, public education financing, and ensuring that residents can prosper in our state, we intend to serve Texans,” stated State Representative Rhetta Bowers, a Democrat from Garland.

Texas Democrats are hoping their bipartisan colleagues will pay attention to polls showing that most Texans think the state’s abortion restriction is excessively strict, particularly when the mother’s health is at risk.
State Representative Venton Jones, a Democrat from Dallas, added, “I am hopeful that we will create a Texas that benefits everyone, not just the rich and powerful. The stakes could not be higher this session.”
