McCarthy and the Cowboys were unable to agree on the terms of a new contract, according to Tom Pelisseror of the NFL Network.

On Monday afternoon, Jerry Jones, the general manager and owner of the Dallas Cowboys, issued a long statement regarding McCarthy’s departure as Cowboys coach:
“I have had nothing but praise for Mike McCarthy’s work during his time here, particularly the past several weeks. That has been true of our performance during that time, of our culture and cohesiveness as a team, of Mike’s credentials and success history, and on a personal level as an amazing guy. Mike has guided the team through some extremely unusual and difficult moments during his tenure, and I have a lot of respect for him.
In addition to spending a lot of time talking about the team’s future, Mike and I had the chance to jointly analyze every facet of the previous season, including our players and staff, during the last week. These conversations were in-depth and given enough time and attention to cover everything. However, it became evident to both of us that we would be better off going in a different way before we even got to the point of contract discussions. I express my gratitude to Mike and send my best wishes to him, his wife, Jessica, and their family. They have been a fantastic addition to this town.
We will start the hiring process right away to find the Dallas Cowboys’ new head coach.”
