“They might work for Dallas ISD, yet they might reside in a nearby school district. Therefore, it presents some difficulties for our entire community if we are closed and they are open, or vice versa,” she stated. “Someone will believe there is a better option, regardless of what we pick. We’ll always keep everyone safe by airing on the side.

Dallas ISD considered a number of criteria, such as road conditions, sidewalk safety, and building infrastructure, such as the possibility of pipe leaks.

“If there is any type of ice, we all know that is extremely dangerous,” stated Elizalde. “No matter how prepared we are, we don t want our drivers to have to deal with it.”

Superintendents also need to prioritize children’s attendance in the school from an educational perspective and to avoid interfering with parents’ work schedules if the roads are safe.

According to school districts, safety is the primary factor they take into account when calling off classes. Regarding children, they wholeheartedly support the choice.

“Students must be present in class. As we know kids are learning and developing in school, we need them there,” stated Tabitha Branum, the superintendent of Richardson ISD. However, safety must be taken into account when we are aware that inclement weather is possible. Our goal is to guarantee the safety of our students, employees, community, and families as they travel to and from school.

Some school districts are delaying their decision regarding Friday classes until Thursday.
