On Tuesday, city officials provided an update on how their crews and other departments are getting ready for the bad weather.

Dallas’ emergency management director, Kevin Oden, stated that his staff has been keeping an eye on the forecast and preparing for its effects. Over the next days, they intend to add more employees and offer daily updates.
“Take the time to prepare now as we have seen conditions can change quickly,” he stated. “Taking steps now can help families remain safe.”
In addition to Dallas residents, thousands more fans will be in town on Friday for the Cotton Bowl.
“I also want to mention that we are closely monitoring travel conditions into the city especially as we prepare to host fans and teams for the Cotton Bowl,” Oden stated. “Our priority is ensuring safe travel for the teams and their fans visiting Dallas and the Metroplex, allowing them to enjoy their time here safely.”
Transportation, Travel and Road Conditions
Gus Khankarli, the director of transportation and public works, reported that his teams began applying a brine solution to city roads and bridges on Monday.
Starting on Wednesday, those teams will be out in sand trucks once more, keeping an eye on the state of the roads and spreading sand where problems are found.
Roads that need to be cleared later this week will be cleared in order of importance in relation to important structures and main thoroughfares.
The city’s public works department’s Ghassan Khankarlli added, “We are starting to bring in staff [Wednesday] and will go on 12-hour operations per shift.”
Distribution of salt will be handled by Dallas Fire-Rescue. Firefighters will assist with emergency transit needs and try to clear the roads of accidents.
If the storm or power outages disrupt any stoplights or road signs, public works staff will be ready to assist.
Love Field is also owned by the city of Dallas. Officials from the aviation department are advising travelers to arrive at the airport at least two hours early and to plan for any delays.
According to Lauren Rounds of Dallas Love Field, “we do have several trucks and trailers and over 40,000 gallons of de-icer on hand.”
Warming Shelters
At Fair Park, Dallas has already established a makeshift shelter for the homeless.
According to Christine Crossley, director of the Office of Homeless Solutions, the shelter opened three days ago and is currently almost full.
Dallas to open Fair Park shelter ahead of freezing temps
On Sunday, the City of Dallas will open a facility in Fair Park for those who want to escape the weather.
Tuesday at 2 p.m., a second shelter will open at the former Austin Street Shelter, which is situated at 2929 Hickory Street. In order to ensure everyone’s safety, a third shelter location will be disclosed if necessary.
“ADA accessibility is provided. We will come and pick you up if you are unable to get there on your own. “Pets don’t create obstacles,” Crossley stated.
According to Crossley, several of the city’s recreation centers are also distributing cold weather kits that include gloves, hats, socks, and hand warmers.
“People are strongly encouraged to enter. This weather is quite hazardous. However, please get one of these cold weather packs if you plan to remain outside. “Your best chance of surviving is with them,” she continued.
Trash Collection
The city’s winter weather strategy is being carried out by the sanitary department. Accordingly, crews will only report for duty on Thursday and Friday, provided that the weather permits.
If personnel are unable to collect rubbish due to unsafe road conditions, residents whose trash is collected on Thursday and Friday will be informed.
“There can be postponements or delays because of possible weather and resource limitations. While routes that require manual labor can encounter extra delays, routes that are served by automated trucks might be able to go as scheduled, according to Sanitation Director Clifton Cillespie.
Animal Shelters
According to Dallas Animal Services, they are getting ready for a surge in calls regarding animals being abandoned outside.
“Our employees will be on duty around-the-clock to monitor and handle these calls. We also want to let you know that some pets, including huskies and other breeds, have this weather built into their systems. Therefore, since such animals are adapted to that kind of climate, it might not be a problem if you see them out there. However, Paul Ramon of DAS advised everyone else to make sure they were dialing 311.
Since Sunday, there have been around 60 weather-related calls handled by animal control officials.

“Taking proactive steps today and tomorrow will significantly help folks and their families remain safe,” he stated.
