At Silver Lake Elementary School in Grapevine, what started out as a fun Thursday morning pajama Read-a-rama turned into a day with a twist in the narrative.

Kalen told his daughter Claire Martin, “Daddy missed you so much,” while he shocked her first-grade class. “Your class is just adorable. Thank to everybody.

Since September, Kalen had been away, finishing boot camp in South Carolina.

“One of the best emotions I’ve ever experienced in my life. The last two months have been really difficult. Serving my country is an incredible chance,” he remarked. “Biggest challenges by far were being away from my family, my kids.”

Despite having gone to Silver Lake School himself, Kalen claimed he never would have thought he would be wearing his uniform again to visit his daughter.

“I want my kids to have access to chances that I may not have had as a child.

The other two children of Kalen and his spouse, Heather Martin, are Oden, age one, and Chase, age three.

“I was crying uncontrollably. I’m still in tears,” Heather remarked. “Their bond is unique. For me, it means the world to see them together again.

“He always plays with me, picks me up and turns me around,” said Claire.

For the Martins, it will probably go down as the most memorable Christmas present ever.

“I really have everything that I need,” was Heather’s statement.

Only 14 days are spent at home with Kalen. After completing his training, he will travel to Fort Gregg Adams in Virginia to find out where his family will be assigned.
