The Lyft rider claims that after they arrived at the drop-off spot, he was attacked from behind, first with a knife and then with a cable or wire that was intended to strangle him.
FRISCO, Texas:Although he is still in critical condition, a Lyft driver who was brutally attacked during a ride is no longer in the hospital.
The 25-year-old ride-share driver picked up a man on Monday night, and according to the police, the man assaulted him from behind, stabbed him in the throat, and took his car.
Dilaver Berk, 25, is grateful to be alive despite being bedridden.
There are sutures all over the Lyft driver’s neck. It’s too graphic to reveal the wound. His hands have significant gashes that are covered in bandages.
Dustin Tovi, a friend of Berk’s, addressed Thursday on his behalf.
“Thank goodness, he was taken to the hospital right away. He claimed that the paramedics arrived just in time.
Berk told police that on Monday night, while driving for Lyft, he picked up Antwain Williams, 19, of Frisco.
Berk claims he was assaulted from behind, first with a knife and then with a cable or wire to try to strangle him, once they arrived at the drop-off spot at Legends at Legacy Apartments off Legacy Drive.
In order to slit Dilaver’s throat, the rider brought a knife to him. “He did that a few times,” Tovi remarked. “Hey, whatever you want,” Dilaver said, placing his hands directly in front of the knife. Go away from me. He was then required to wear a wire around his neck. Dilaver also made contact. He was stabbed a few times, which resulted in several injuries to his fingers and neck.
According to Frisco police, Williams left Berk in the parking lot of his apartment after stealing his Toyota Camry. Fortunately, a woman was there to assist Berk and make a 911 call.
The stolen Camry was discovered by a patrol officer a few hours later close to Highway 423 and Rockhill. When police attempted to stop the car, the driver fled.
Williams reportedly crashed out and attempted to flee before being taken into custody, according to the police.
Berk, meantime, sent money to his parents back home after relocating to North Texas from Turkey last year. As he heals, he is now depending on his friends and cousins.
“He’s somebody that works really hard, and it’s really sad to see what happened to him,” Tovi replied. “Nobody deserves that, especially Dilaver because he works so hard.”
Williams is still being held in the Denton County jail on allegations of evading arrest and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
Additionally, Williams had an active warrant for allegedly inciting a juvenile to engage in sexual activity.
