Cynt Marshall, the CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, is recognized for having improved the team’s organization and ties to the community.

Since Cynt Marshall took over as CEO of the Dallas Mavericks in 2018, the team has been known for its inspirational leadership. “I’m incredibly proud that another outstanding leader will soon take over her legacy of success and our family’s vision for this franchise’s future,” Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont said. “Rick Welts is a Hall of Fame member and one of the NBA’s most successful executives in history. It is obvious that this organization is committed to expanding its standing as an elite NBA club and further establishing the franchise as one of the most well-liked sports teams in the world that he is joining us as we build on the Mavericks’ remarkable past.”

“The chance to lead this organization in this city at this time is both incredibly exciting and unexpected,” Welts said. “I value Patrick’s assurance in choosing me to continue the success and culture established by Cynt Marshall and Nico Harrison. I am really confident in taking advantage of this opportunity because I have been friends with both of them for a long time. I’m eager to start learning everything I can about Dallas and how to best support this community and our supporters.”

Cynt Marshall became the first Black woman CEO in NBA history when she joined the company in March 2018. After it was revealed that there had been widespread sexual harassment at the Mavericks, she was hired by former Governor Mark Cuban.

“I’m delighted to hand the reins over to my friend Rick Welts. I’ve profited from his expertise and extensive experience in the sports and entertainment industries since the day I joined the Mavs,” Marshall said. “I’m thrilled that our team will be in such capable hands because I adore them so much. Without a doubt, Rick and his family will welcome and take pleasure in Dallas’ amazing communities, workers, and supporters.

At the age of 16, Welts started his NBA career as a ballboy with the SuperSonics in 1969. Ten years later, as the team’s public relations director, he helped the team win its only NBA title in 1979. Among Welts’ noteworthy achievements during his 17 years at the NBA league office in New York were the establishment of NBA All-Star Weekend in 1984 and the marketing initiative for USA Basketball’s Olympic “Dream Team” in 1992. In 1998, Brandweek recognized him “Marketer of the Year” for helping to start the WNBA, together with Val Ackerman.
