Texas’s Fort WorthIn Tarrant County, a mother is determined to support her twin boys’ success. She refuses to allow autism to hinder them. The teenagers are now managing their own company.
When Matthew and Seth Sherwin reached sixteen, their first goal was to get employment. They were excited because some of their pals had landed their first jobs. Their employment interviews, however, did not go as well as they had imagined.
Their mother, Blanca Sherwin, stated, “It was evident that not all of society is still ready to hire autistic kids, especially 16-year-olds with no experience.” “Knowing how eager and willing my children are to learn made my mama heart ache a little. as well as their ability.”
Blanca made the decision to act independently at that point.
“I had trouble sleeping one day. “I saw a trailer for sale on Facebook,” she added.
The guys had previously helped at Texas Christian University’s concession stands and held a food handling license from their school.
“Why don’t we start a snow cone company, my mom says? The next thing you know, Mom gets us flavors after buying us a trailer,” Seth remarked.
The family spent six months renovating and updating the camper. The truck passed the health test in November.
“Sorry I m getting emotional, but it was a lot of work and a lot of stress and a lot of sweat and tears and lots of friends having to come help me because I couldn t do it all by myself,” Blanca stated.
The tagline for their mobile company, Spectrum Treats, is “Full Flavor, Color, and Personality.”
“They are well conscious that they have autism. It was never considered a disability by us. They never learned about it as a disability from me. “Quite the opposite,” Blanca remarked.
She capitalized on their advantages.
“I like to do inventory and I keep it on a calendar. I keep track of everything,” Matthew said.
“He can tell me how many sleeves of cups we need and how many we have, just from memory because he has that capability,” his mom said.
Seth is the communicator.
“He loves people. He loves to make that connection and make people feel good,” Blanca said.
Both are learning life skills and a business sense, thanks to their tenacious mom.
“I want to give my kids the tools to be able to function when I am no longer here,” she said.

A popular North Dallas ice cream shop was broken into early Tuesday morning. Some of the money stolen was meant for the shop’s hard-working employees.
“She s a great mom no matter what. I d just like to say she s always been the best. And she deserves a free snow cone as well from us,” Seth laughed.
Blanca actually spent 17 years in law enforcement before becoming an art teacher at the boys school Wedgewood Academy in Fort Worth. It s a nonprofit school for children with learning disabilities.
