The Terrell police officer who was slain late Sunday night while performing his duties was honored with a procession on Wednesday morning. Since the 1980s, Officer Jacob Candanoza has been the first member of the Terrell Police Department to be killed.
Officer Candanoza was honored by other police on Wednesday morning with a march from Dallas County to Kaufman County.
As Candanoza’s body was being transported from the hearse into the funeral home, cops were shown on SKY 4 standing at attention and then saluting.

Candlelight Vigil
On Wednesday at 6 p.m., a candlelight vigil for Officer Candanoza will take place outside the Terrell police headquarters, which is situated at 1100 N. State Highway 34.

The Backstory
According to investigations, Officer Candanoza stopped a pickup truck with expired license plates from Mississippi at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, which resulted in the fatal police shot.
Before approaching the pickup being driven by Darrian Cortez Johnson in the motel parking lot off State Highway 34 close to Interstate 20 in Terrell, the officer made a call for cover.
However, authorities said Johnson shot the officer many times at close range before the backup could arrive.

According to the police, the officer phoned for help after stopping a truck from Mississippi with expired license plates. However, he was shot several times at close range before help arrived.
“During the initial traffic stop,” Terrell Police Lt. Mary Hauger stated, “the officer was able to provide a license plate.” “Off-duty officers along with Texas highway patrol located that vehicle and pursued it into Van Zandt County.”
After seeing the truck close to the border between Van Zandt and Kaufman counties, deputies began pursuing it. According to them, Johnson eventually caused the car to crash and plunge into a wooded area.
Following a seven-hour manhunt, Johnson was apprehended by authorities around 5:30 a.m.
After being brought to a hospital in Forney, Candanoza passed away from his wounds.
