According to investigations, Officer Candanoza stopped a pickup truck with expired license plates from Mississippi at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, which resulted in the fatal police shot.

Before approaching the pickup being driven by Darrian Cortez Johnson in the motel parking lot off State Highway 34 close to Interstate 20 in Terrell, the officer made a call for cover.

However, authorities said Johnson shot the officer many times at close range before the backup could arrive.
