Texas’s Fort WorthA federally funded food program that helps low-income families with children eat healthier is in its 50th year. Nonetheless, the Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC, program aims to assist more families in stocking their baskets with nutritious food.

And that’s where the WIC program may help.

“If a family practices healthy eating, WIC can provide benefits to children up to age five. The associate director of Family Health Services at the Tarrant County Health Department, Dr. J vonnah Maryman, stated, “We also see that correlate with the health outcome for those family numbers in reducing, you know, helping to reduce chronic conditions going forward.”

A major component of the WIC program, she noted, is breastfeeding and its advantages beyond the baby.

“84% of WIC moms are likely to breastfeed, and we know that research shows breastfeeding leads to a decreased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and breast and ovarian cancers in the mom, not to mention that children who are breastfed have a decreased risk of respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections, just those things that can give new moms more angst and anxiety when they are preparing to care for their infants and their children,” she continued.

The WIC program is open to parents, guardians, grandparents, foster parents, and expectant women who are responsible for children aged 0 to 5.

“In Tarrant County alone, we serve through our WIC program 44,000 participants a month,” stated Dr. Maryman. “The WIC agencies across the state serve about 800,000 participants a month.”

All of the requirements and income requirements that have been enlarged to facilitate program acceptance are available at TexasWIC.org.

“If you are already receiving Medicaid, SNAP, or TEFAP, you already meet the income eligibility for WIC,” Maryman stated. “Every year that we have people registering, the necessity for WIC is evident. We are aware of the necessity. We are aware of the fact that our population is increasing.
