Ennis ISD classes canceled Monday due to water main break and boil water notice

Following a water main break in Ennis that resulted in multiple more breaks, residents are being advised to boil their water. Because of this, Ennis ISD has decided to cancel Monday’s classes.

Texas’s EnnisOn Monday, December 2, Ennis ISD personnel and students will not be attending classrooms due to a boil water order for the City of Ennis.

An 18-inch water main broke at the crossroads of Highway 34 and I-45 on Saturday, shortly before 11 p.m. Numerous further water main breaks throughout the city were caused by that one. Water pressure dropped in several areas of the city.

In an effort to address the problem, the city advised citizens to practice water conservation.

There were seven separate water main breaks that city workers and independent contractors had to deal with. As of 4 p.m., three had been plugged.

Residents were given access to bottled water at Fire Station No. 1, located at 1700 West Lake Bardwell Drive, beginning at noon on Sunday and continuing until six o’clock. On Monday, the distribution of bottled water will resume at the fire station at 8 a.m.

Participants in the water distribution are being asked by the city to enter at the back of the fire station and take Hall Street to Old Bardwell Road.

In order to preserve bottled water for the area of the city that is totally without it, those with running water are encouraged to boil their tap water.

To make sure the water is safe to drink, a sample must be sent to a lab after the pressure is restored.

Boil Water Notice:

Boil your tap water before using it if you can’t find commercially bottled water. Boiling eliminates potentially harmful bacteria from tap water. Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute to eradicate bacteria. Before using boiled water, let it cool to prevent burns. NOTE: If your tap water has passed through a home water filter or a water-filtering pitcher, you will still need to boil it.


Do not use water or ice from your fridge

Avoid drinking or using water from appliances that are connected to your water line during any kind of drinking water alert. This covers the ice and water dispensers in your freezer or refrigerator.


Drinking and cooking

Use boiling water or water in commercial bottles for drinking as well as for cooking and meal preparation.


Handwashing

During a boil water advisory, you can usually wash your hands with soap and tap water.


Bathing and showering

When taking a shower or bath, take care not to swallow any water. When bathing infants and small children, exercise caution. To lessen the possibility that they will swallow water, think about giving them a sponge bath.


Brushing teeth

Use either commercially bottled water or boiling water to brush your teeth. Never use tap water that hasn’t been boiled.

After washing, soak the dishes in water for a minimum of one minute. Before using the dishes again, let them air dry fully.

Use commercially bottled water, heated water, or bleach-disinfected water to clean washable toys and surfaces.
