Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot welcomes 22,000+ runners for annual event

The healthiest way for anyone to begin Thanksgiving is with the annual turkey trot.

At Dallas City Hall Plaza, a balloon arch was used to mark off the starting line.

Around 8:30 a.m., the 5K run and the 8-mile race got underway. Then came the ill-timed “fun run.”

For the yearly event, about 22,000 individuals pre-registered. The morning of the event, several hundred more people signed up.

The event, which raised money for all of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas’s programs that assist about 220,000 families, was organized with the assistance of about 500 volunteers.

Since its modest origins at White Rock Lake fifty-five years ago, the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot has grown to incredible proportions. Today, it’s the biggest Thanksgiving celebration in the United States.

Turkey trotters also took to the streets Thursday morning in Fort Worth for a 5k, 8k run, and 1K gobbler trot in the Clearfork area.



For the races, thousands of competitors and spectators bundled up. Santa was also present to take photos and support the runners.

The turkey trot has been held by the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth for 43 years.
