He talked about an alleged emergency helicopter landing he had with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The story came up when a reporter asked Trump about Vice President Kamala Harris and her past relationship with Brown, wondering if it helped her political career.
Trump claimed, “I know Willie Brown very well. In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this was the end. We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing.” He added that the landing was uncomfortable and that Brown was worried. Trump mentioned that even though he hadn’t seen Brown in years, he felt they had a connection.
However, Brown quickly denied Trump’s account, saying it was “obviously wrong.” In a phone call with CNN, he stated, “I’ve never been in a helicopter with him in my life.” Brown accused Trump of trying to undermine Harris by making up stories. He emphasized that there’s no reason to involve Harris’s name in Trump’s “lies.”
Trump’s campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, responded to Brown’s denial with a simple phrase: “Slick Willie!” This comment seemed to dismiss Brown’s words without addressing the actual claims.
Interestingly, it appears that Trump may have mixed up Willie Brown with another politician. The New York Times reported that he likely confused Brown with former California Governor Jerry Brown. In November 2018, Trump flew over wildfire damage with Jerry Brown, but there was no emergency landing during that trip. A spokesperson for Jerry Brown confirmed this, saying, “There was no emergency landing and no discussion of Kamala Harris.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was also present during the helicopter tour in 2018 as the governor-elect, weighed in on Trump’s story. He flatly called Trump’s account “complete B.S.” and recalled that Trump had repeatedly joked about crashing during their helicopter ride. Newsom confirmed, “I was on a helicopter with Jerry Brown and Trump, and it didn’t go down.”
Trump’s comments about Harris and Brown come amid ongoing attacks from right-wing media figures, who have referred to Harris as a “mistress” because of her past relationship with Brown. This relationship occurred after Brown had separated from his wife and was not a secret, yet it has been a point of criticism against Harris.
During the news conference, Trump claimed that Willie Brown was “not a fan” of Harris and that Brown had shared “terrible things” about her. When asked about these claims, Brown dismissed them, saying, “No. Why would I? Give me a break, please.” His responses reflect a clear disagreement with Trump’s narrative, emphasizing that there is no basis for Trump’s statements.
