Idaho is facing a serious blood shortage, and the American Red Cross is taking action. To encourage people to donate blood, the Red Cross is offering gift cards for online spending to residents who help.
In recent months, blood donations in Idaho have significantly decreased, causing supplies to drop to about 25 percent of what is typically needed, according to idahonews.com. State colleges are also trying to help by organizing blood drives on their campuses, but more donations are essential.
To motivate more people to donate, the Red Cross will send a $20 Amazon gift card to anyone who donates blood for the rest of August. This is a great way to give back while also receiving a little something in return. Type O blood is in high demand, but all blood types are encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Red Cross.
According to the New York Blood Center, anyone currently undergoing treatment for a blood disease or platelet disorder should not donate blood. The hot weather has also contributed to the decline in the blood supply, making the situation more urgent.
To find out more about donation locations or to ask questions, you can contact the American Red Cross in Boise at 208-947-4357. The Red Cross needs whole blood, plasma, platelets, and red cells to help those in critical need. Once your donation is collected, the gift cards will be mailed out as a thank-you for your contribution.
