A tragic accident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon in Wilson County, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of five people and leading to serious charges against a truck driver. The incident caused a nine-hour shutdown of the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 and left the community in shock.
The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. when traffic had slowed due to a lane closure for maintenance. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a Freightliner tractor-trailer carrying orange juice failed to reduce its speed and collided with several vehicles. The impact involved a Chevy Tahoe, a Toyota RAV-4, and two other tractor-trailers. The crash was so severe that the Freightliner caught fire.
Tragically, the occupants of the two SUVs did not survive. They were identified as William and Elizabeth Tucker from Hephzibah, Georgia; Edward and Martha Davis from Greenville, North Carolina; and Linda Whitehurst from Robersonville, North Carolina. This devastating loss has deeply affected their families and communities.
The drivers of the three tractor-trailers involved in the crash were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Freightliner was released from the hospital, arrested, and charged with five counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. His bond was set at $25,000.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the Highway Patrol suggests that excessive speed was a contributing factor to the accident. However, there is no indication that alcohol or drug impairment played a role.
