Ever since the pandemic hit, businesses have been struggling to stay afloat. Closing down stores that are underperforming and filing for bankruptcy have become common practices in today’s world. One such example is the popular grocery chain Stop & Shop, which is set to close 32 underperforming stores by the end of 2024.
Stop & Shop, a well-known grocery chain in the Northeast, is taking significant steps as part of its new strategy. The parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, has announced that these closures are part of their global “Growing Together” strategy. Launched in May 2024, this strategy aims to grow sales, maintain margins, and achieve sustainability and inclusivity goals.
Despite these closures, Stop & Shop will still operate 350 locations across the United States. According to Chainstorage.com, the 32 impacted store locations, which are anticipated to close on or before November 2, 2024, include several in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

- 211 High St., Torrington (931 Torringford St., Torrington will remain open)
- 1937 West Main St., Stamford (2200 Bedford St., Stamford will remain open)
- 855 Bridgeport Ave., Milford (1360 East Town Road, Milford will remain open)
- 72 Newtown Road, Danbury (44 Lake Avenue Ext., Danbury will remain open)
Massachusetts:
- 932 North Montello St., Brockton
- 36 New State Highway, Raynham
- 341 Plymouth St., Halifax
- 539-571 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury
- 165 Needham St., Newton (bfresh Market)
- 415 Cooley St., Springfield (1600 Boston Rd. and 1277 Liberty St., Springfield will remain open)
- 545 Lincoln St., Worcester (940 West Boylston St. and 949 Grafton St., Worcester will remain open)
- 24 Mattakeesett St., Pembroke (125 Church St., Pembroke will remain open)
New Jersey:

In typical fashion, a company representative has stepped forward to address the closures. Stop & Shop president Gordon Reid emphasized the company’s longstanding community ties, stating, “Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers, and communities.”
As with most corporate downsizing, the company has promised to provide options for the affected employees. However, this often means that employees will need to travel further for work or even relocate, which is not feasible for everyone.
The closures reflect the ongoing challenges faced by many businesses in the current economic climate. Stop & Shop’s decision to close 32 stores is part of its broader strategy to adapt and remain competitive while striving to meet its sustainability and inclusivity goals. While this move is a step towards achieving those goals, it also highlights the difficult decisions companies must make to stay viable in a rapidly changing market.
