Tom Marty, a highly regarded veteran from Brazos Valley and former Commander of American Legion Post 159 in Bryan, has recently been elected as the American Legion State Commander. This significant appointment took place during the organization’s annual convention in Austin, Texas, held on Sunday.
The American Legion, established by Congress in 1919, is the largest and oldest veterans’ organization in the United States. It is committed to community service and upholds four core pillars: veterans’ Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth.
Marty brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role. His journey within the American Legion includes serving as District Vice Commander and holding the position of State Training Chair for an impressive six-year tenure.
During this time, Marty played a pivotal role in launching the Texas Legion College, a mobile education initiative aimed at providing essential training to Legionnaires across various posts throughout the state. Following his tenure as State Vice Commander in 2023, Marty undertook an extensive campaign, traveling extensively to visit numerous posts and engage with members.
His commitment to service began in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Security Policeman from 1981 to 1987. Transitioning into civilian life, Marty embarked on a distinguished 32-year career as a policeman and investigator.
Since retiring in 2013, Marty has been actively involved in volunteer work, contributing significantly to the Bush Presidential Library, the City of College Station Parks Board, the Brazos County Veterans/Mental Health Court Committee, and Wellborn Baptist Church, among other organizations.
